Salon Review: Fiddleheads-DC

I'm setting a goal for 2015 to visit at least one natural hair salon per month. It's so hard to find reviews about salons/stylists for curly and kinky hair so I'm volunteering myself as tribute to start exploring the salon world. I grew up in salons where I got my hair pressed prior to going natural and its definitely something I miss because lets face it, doing your own hair gets tiring. My first review is actually for an experience I had in September at the Fiddleheads Salon in Bloomingdale, DC. I was desperate to get my hair trimmed because my ends have SUFFERED since I switched jobs and lengthened my commute, it was my homecoming weekend and my usual salon in NY messed up my appointment (no shade, honest mistake). I was looking rough and I was under time constraints. A friend told me about Fiddleheads, but she hadn't tried it herself. I checked Yelp to make sure I wasn't walking into a hair hell and then booked my appointment.

My stylist was Wangui and I was very impressed! Fiddleheads uses the Deva Cut technique to shape curly hair. I was unfamiliar with the technique, having been used to the Hair Rules Method of straightening the hair to cut, and so I didn't know I was supposed to prep my hair (no product and falling naturally) for the appointment. Wangui handled this like a pro and was able to cut my hair dry, stretched and unwashed, and it came out perfect after she gave me my wash and go. Wangui is one of those stylists who have a natural talent for styling hair and is able to improvise when needed instead of going by the book. She was funny and smart and really put me at ease about my hair.

The service of the salon was really nice and professional and my entire haircut and wash/style only took 1 HOUR! I never thought such a thing was possible, especially since my hair was very tangled, but it was an amazing feeling. The price of the hair cut is pretty good ($70), considering how expensive natural salons tend to be. I give the Salon a 5/5 for good service, professionalism and quickness and I give Wangui a 5/5 as well. Book an appointment with her A.S.A.P if you're in that area!
