The 1 Hour Detangle, Wash and Go

I think the Wash and Go is the black belt of having curly hair. Once you achieve it, and can do it with ease and swiftness, you’re dubbed a guru.

When transitioning from relaxed or heat damaged hair, we sometimes can’t see our curl pattern at first, and aren’t sure if it will look good to us. When you’re halfway through transitioning, it’s still not an option because half your hair is curly and the other half is bone straight. So you stick to twist outs, bantu knots, and rod sets.

When you finally get to the stage of doing your first wash and go, it’s scary. You know it’s going to take a long time and if you don’t have your technique down, it will be hit or miss. I’ve mastered my wash and go lately, entering black belt territory, and feel it’s my responsibility to share how. Last year, Whitney aka Naptural85 (aka the supreme queen of quick and easy styling, care, and maintenance) came out with her 25 minute detangle/co-wash and go video. I’m sure all the viewers of that video were as skeptical as I was because Whitney’s hair is thick and massive. I had to see this “magic trick”. But of course Whitney nailed it in the allotted time and I was left with my mouth agape.

I had to try it for myself. My detangle took 15 minutes and my co-wash took another 15 minutes. A 30 minute wash and go [1]? I couldn’t believe that half of my whole day wasn’t spent washing, styling, and waiting for my hair to dry. As a result, lately I’ve been doing wash and go styles every week now. I am no longer reluctant nor do I carry an exhausted attitude when it comes to wash day. If my 4 day hair isn't looking good for an occasion I want them to look good for, I know that washing it on the fly will be no hassle. Now you can save time too!

Detangling your hair with oil and conditioner before washing not only saves time, but also leads to less tangles and less shedding over all. If you try this yourself, let me know how it went in the comments below. Happy wash day!

[1] Not including deep conditioning which took me 20 minutes as well as going under the dryer for about 30 minutes. Some days I don’t deep condition and let my hair air dry. I also skipped the part about detangling with running water because I found that the conditioner and coconut oil was enough to make my hair become malleable.
