5 Goals Everyone Should Set this Holiday Season

The holidays are here (I’m still in disbelief at how quickly this happened). I’m not sure about you but for me, it has always meant spending time with loved ones, overeating, shopping, catching up on TV shows and getting endless amounts of sleep. But now that I’ve finally embraced adulting (help me), I’ve decided to change the way I spend the holiday season a bit. I’ll still overeat and sleep as much as possible but there are a few goals I’ve set for myself that you should consider setting, too.

Be present
I hear pretty often how important it is to live in the moment, unplug sometimes and just relax. I never do it because I’m always texting, replying to emails and posting to social media — but this holiday season, I’m challenging myself to focus less on my phone and more on what’s happening around me. If I’m out with friends, I’ll be attentive. If I’m traveling, I’ll still snap photos, but I’ll spend more time soaking up the moment and less time behind my camera lens. I’ll be present.

Reconnect
The holiday season is always a good time to reach out to people you haven’t communicated with in a while. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends over lunch, via Skype or a fun night out. For your professional network or former colleagues, use the time to send a few “checking in/Happy Holidays” emails to reignite professional relationships and work on fostering them into the New Year.

Get a head start
I don’t know about you but I typically wait until January 1st to start setting my goals for the year. January 1st also means some distractions like taking a peek at my email before going back to work on January 2nd. This year, I plan to set my goals for 2017 and create some long-term and short-term action plans that I can get a head start on before January 1st. I’m hoping that by starting early, my action steps will become habits by the time January rolls around (fingers crossed).

Practice self-care
*Sigh* my personal favorite: self-care. I’m proud to say that I meditate everyday and hit the nail salon faithfully every 3 weeks for a mani/pedi but that’s about the extent of the things I do for me. This holiday season, let me tell you, I plan to sleep, get a facial for the first time and get some much-needed (and well overdue) exercise. I encourage you to practice self-care too. Use some of the time off to get comfortable, try something you’ve always wanted to do or simply treat yourself. I’m pretty sure you deserve it.

Capture it
Although this may contradict my advice in point #1 a bit, I couldn’t end this post without making this point. As I mentioned, I LOVE taking photos! Not of myself but of things like architecture, fall trees, and food. While I’m sure I’ll do those things this holiday season — just less — I’m encouraging myself to take photos of the family and friends I get to see during this time of year. Since getting married and becoming extremely focused on my career, I don’t see my friends or family as much. So when birthdays come around and I want to shout them out on social media, I’ve gotta go digging for photos because it has been so long. Take advantage of the time together and take photos. You’ll be glad you did.
