Salon Review: Hair at Home with TresseNoire
This salon review is a little bit different because, this time, the salon came to me! That's right. I got my hair done from the comfort of my living room by one of TresseNoire's talented stylists. TresseNoire is an in-home and on location beauty service that allows you to get your hair and make up done from the comfort of your home. No waiting all day for your turn in the chair, looking for parking, or even leaving work (if you want your hair done at the office!). They offer a variety of style options, including blow-outs, curl styles, crotchet braids, and sew-ins, as well as updos for special occasions, trims, and deep-conditioning add-ons. Read until the end for an exclusive discount!
For my appointment with TresseNoire, I chose to get a flexirod set. I chose this style because I have never been successful at doing them on my own and wanted them to be perfect. I removed my senegalese twists the night before and washed my hair the morning of the appointment. For most services, it is recommended that your hair is freshly washed and product free prior to your appointment, but you can add on wash and dry services for an extra fee. My TresseNoire stylist arrived right on time and we got acquainted before she set up shop. She assessed my hair, noting that I needed a trim soon but we agreed that it wasn't necessary for my style that day.
After our quick consultation, my stylist got straight to work. She added Carol's Daughter Healthy Hair Butter to re-moisturize my hair. She then applied Nairobi Foaming Lotion and began wrapping my hair around skinny flexirods. In about 30 minutes, I was ready to go under the dryer. We set up the portable hair dryer on my kitchen island and I sat underneath for about an 60-90 minutes. Once my hair was dry, she got to work on styling my curls. She separated each section carefully with Carol's Daughter Hair Mimosa for a fuller spiral looked. Finally, she fluffed my hair and applied edge control and then we were done!
I found TresseNoire's prices to be comparable with those of the average NYC natural hair salon, but considering they are saving you time by traveling to your home, it seems worth the expense. Prices range from $85 for wash + curl style up to $225 for a sew-in. A rodset like mine costs $125 which is on par with what I've paid for the service at other salons. Additionally, you are more than welcome to request that the stylist use your products. They may make additional recommendations based on the style you chose, but will honor any preferences you have.
I was was more than pleased with how my hair turned out and as I write this review 4 days later , my curls are still fresh, bouncy, and soft. I definitely plan to book them again soon. Having to wash my hair prior made me nervous at first, but I realized through this experience that the daunting part of wash day isn't the washing itself: it's the styling. Being able to let TresseNoire take the stress of styling away put me at ease and I was able to have my hair done in half the time.
